Biography

Henry ‘Harry’ Bell (SN 191), born in Bendigo, was 39 years old, married and an insurance agent when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 1st 1915. He embarked on the Ascanius on November 10th and was posted to the 29th Infantry Battalion. He was reported as 'Missing in Action' during the terrible fighting at Fromelles. Sometime later his identity discs were returned by the German authorities. There was no accompanying information beyond ‘deceased’. A Court of Enquiry subsequently determined that Private Bell had been killed in action on 19th July 1916. His name is recorded on the Australian Memorial Wall at VC Corner Cemetery, at Fromelles, but in 2008 his remains were discovered after the excavation of burial pits beside Pheasant Wood so he now lies in a marked grave in the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery. He was 40 years of age.
