Biography

Samuel Robert Hannah (SN 2655) was born in Ballarat and attended the Wattle Flat State School. On July 21st 1915 he enlisted at Ballarat as an 18 year old labourer. He left Melbourne in late October to join the 58th Infantry Battalion but was later transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion. He undertook further training in Egypt and arrived in France in June 1916. He was wounded during the fighting at Messines, Belgium and died on 8th June 1917, the day after his older brother James. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery, France. He was 20 years of age.

His brother James also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
