Herbert William Dawe (SN 91A) born at Ballarat, was a 21 year old farmer when he enlisted on July 22nd 1915. On November 10th he embarked aboard the Ascanius and in June 1916 he joined the 8th Machine Gun Company in France. During his service he twice suffered mild wounds, shell shock and concussion, but otherwise he avoided serious illness or injury. He returned to Australia aboard the Wyreema, disembarked at Melbourne on May 31st 1919 and was discharged on July 25th.
