Most of his service during 1916 was spent proving medical aid to soldiers on Hospital Transport Ships, resulting in a multitude of embarkation dates from around Australia ranging from 29 July to 19 September. Eventually he transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance. According to a medical report dated 8 May 1919, while in Cairo, he began suffering from pyrexia, complaining of headaches, weakness and giddiness. He returned to Australia 17 July 1919.
