Charles Edward Rice was born in Ballarat and was a Draper by trade when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, 10th Reinforcement on 5 July 1915 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. He served with the 5th Division Ammunition Column (Artillery) and was fortunate to have a relatively uneventful passage through the war. He returned to Australia on the Orontes in mid-1919.
