Biography

Richard (Dick) Stevens (SN 4589) was born in Ballarat and attended Urquhart Street State School. The 20 year old cabinet maker enlisted on July 4th 1915 and was allocated to the 58th Infantry Battalion, embarking from Melbourne the following January on board the Themistocles. He arrived in France in June 1916 but was wounded in action and evacuated to England twice in the next 18 months, during which time he was promoted to Sergeant. On September 29th 1918 he was killed in action at Bellicourt, and is buried in the Bellicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
