Biography

William Henry Thomas was born in Ballarat and was a Carpenter by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 14 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. In April, while in Egypt, he was transferred to the 58th Battalion but in June he became ill. He had developed pneumonia and was assessed as dangerously ill. He remained on the danger list until late in July, but once strong enough he was returned to Australia. He returned home on the Borda and disembarked at Melbourne on September 16th 1916. He was discharged in early December æmedically unfit – empyema left side'.
