Biography

Hugh Mclndo McGeachin (SN 3998) was born in Ballarat where he enlisted with the permission of his parents on July 26th 1915. 20 years old, unmarried and working as a butcher, he was posted to the 8th Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in November on board the Ceramic. While training in Egypt, he was transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion and had several stays in hospital with influenza and rheumatism, before being transferred to France in June 1916. In January 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder. After rejoining his unit in February, he was killed during the fighting at Bullecourt on April 11th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
