John George Trezise was born in Buninyong, Victoria, was single and a Striker living on Ripon Street, Ballarat, Victoria when he enlisted with the 7th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 3 November 1914 at the age 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray on 2 February 1915. After proceeding overseas to France he was admitted to the No. 154 General Hospital having suffered a gunshot wound to the right hand and forearm. Despite the wound being classified as 'slight', he was invalided to Australia on 3 September 1915 and was discharged after the amputation of his right arm on 11 January 1917.
