John Cartledge (SN 4158) was an 18 year old battery feeder from Mt. Clear when his parents Elizabeth and Benjaman consented to him enlisting on July 15th 1915. In December of that year he sailed for Europe on the Demosthenes to serve as a member of the 14th Battalion. He was wounded in action on three separate occasions, once each in 1916, 1917 and 1918. Twice he suffered gunshot wounds and once he was gassed but he recovered each time. No doubt greatly relieved, he boarded the Devanha in early 1919 for the return voyage to Australia. He died in May 1962 at the age of 65.
