Born in Korong Vale, Victoria, Arthur Hicks was a single 28 year old malster at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 15th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on the 7th of March 1916.
On the 17th of May 1917, Arthur was wounded in action. He was invalided to the U.K and admitted to Horton County London War Hospital on the 24th of April 1917 suffering with a severe gunshot wound to his left foot. He returned to Australia on the 4th of March 1918 and was discharged on the 17th of July 1918 due to his wound.
