Biography

William John Thompson was born in Sebastopol, Victoria, was married and a Miner when he enlisted with the 24th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 15 July 1915 at the age of 44. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. His term of service was brief, returning home to Australia on 25 December 1916 due to being found medically unfit, suffering from myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) and a right inguinal hernia. He received his final discharge on 8 February 1917.
