Biography

William Stanhope White (SN 4336) was born in South Africa and was a 22 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 16th 1915. He embarked aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th. Initially assigned to the 14th Infantry Battalion he was transferred to the 46th Battalion before he reached France in June 1916. In August he was wounded in action, shell shock, and evacuated to hospital in England. His service from then was hampered by health issues, particularly cardiac. He was returned to Australia on the Karmala, disembarked on February 15th 1919 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, effort syndrome’ on April 1st.
