Reginald Reid was born in Ballarat East and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 16 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 14 March 1916. On April 11th 1917 he was reported missing in action at Reincourt, but it was not until late July that it was confirmed he had been wounded (suffering a gunshot wound to his left shoulder), taken prisoner of war and imprisoned at Gef Dulmen in Westphalia, Germany, where he remained until the war's end. He returned to Australia in March 1919.
