Arthur George Waugh (SN 1807) was born in Launceston, and was a 34 year old confectioner when he enlisted in Geelong on April 14th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 22nd Battalion, he was aboard the Southland when it was torpedoed on September 2nd 1915 as it approached the island of Lemnos, near Gallipoli. Initially he was listed as 'missing believed drowned' but five days later he is listed as 'rejoined unit' and commended for being part of the volunteer team that helped get the Southland to the shore. In March 1916 he was transferred to the 21st Battalion with which he moved to France. On July 29th at Poziers, he sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh but recovered and was able to rejoin his unit. In June 1917, while still in France, he was disciplined for 'drunkenness while on active service'. On October 5th 1918 he was wounded for a second time, suffering a severe gunshot wound to his left arm. He was evacuated to hospital in England where he remained until the fighting ceased a month later. He disembarked back in Melbourne on March 5th 1919 and was discharged six weeks later.
