Edward Ernest Fleming was born in Bolwarrah, VIC and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 14th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 16 July 1915 at the age of 31. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 46th Battalion with whom he moved to France. On August 30th 1916 he was wounded in action during the intense fighting at Pozieres. He received shrapnel wounds to his back and to both arms, and was evacuated to England where he spent time recovering at hospitals in Norwich and Dartford. He was then assessed as fit only for home service so he returned to Australia on the Runic in May 1917.
