Edward Ernest Fleming (SN 3732) born at Bolwarrah, was a 31 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 16th 1915. Assigned to the 14th Battalion his unit embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ceramic on November 23rd 1915. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 46th Battalion with whom he moved to France. On August 30th 1916 he was wounded in action during the intense fighting at Pozieres. He received shrapnel wounds to his back and to both arms, and was evacuated to England where he spent time recovering in hospital. He was then assessed as fit only for home service so he returned to Australia on the Runic disembarking on July 5th 1917 and was discharged on August 16th. He also enlisted (SN V361452) to serve during WW2.
