Biography

Arthur Kane was born in Ballarat East when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion on 16 July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. He saw action in France, and in August 1916 he was wounded, suffering from shell shock. He was hospitalised in France then evacuated to the 3rd Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, England. His recovery was slow and it was decided that he should be returned to Australia. He reached Melbourne, on the Themistocles, on July 2nd 1917 and was subsequently discharged as medically unfit, suffering from æshell shock and debility'.
