Biography

George Ronald Watkins (SN 4614) born at Learmonth, was a 21 year old gas fitter when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 16th 1915. On January 28th 1916, assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Themistocles and sailed to Egypt. In April 1916 he was transferred to the 58th Battalion before moving to France. On July 4th he suffered wounds to his face and a compound fracture of his foot. He was evacuated to hospital in England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He left England aboard the Kanowna in January 1917, disembarked at Melbourne on March 8th and was discharged medically unfit on May 30th 1917.
