Norman Herbert Patterson was born in Ballarat and was a Gas fitter when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, 10th Reinforcement on 12 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. On 29 November 1916 he suffered a case of Trench Feet and was hospitalised for a month. On 10 June 1918, while in France, he was wounded in action (unspecified). He returned to Australia 22 August 1919, receiving a medical discharge on 7 December 1919.
