Biography

Leslie Herbert Sykes was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was married to Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sykes of 165 Main Road, Ballarat East, Victoria and was a Plumber when he enlisted with the 5th Field Company Engineers, Reinforcement 7 on 17 July 1915 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 2 May 1916. He was admitted to hospital for illness in France on 8 November 1916, returning to duty on the 27th of November. Other than this it appears he completed his tour without major incident, illness or injury, leaving England for Australia aboard the Wyreema on 13 April 1919, reaching Melbourne on 31 May and receiving a full discharge from service on 25 July 1919.
