David Beaumont was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 13th Reinforcement on 17 July 1915 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. Before the year's end however a battle wound (gunshot wound to the hand) and an accidental injury (horse kick to the left leg/hip) combined to render him unfit for active service. He sailed from England on November 12th, on the Wiltshire, disembarked in Melbourne on December 31st 1916 and was discharged æmedically unfit' in early 1917.
