Biography

John Alphonsus Trait was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Boilermaker when he enlisted with the 14th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement on 12 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 11 October 1915. He proceeded overseas to France to join his unit on 6 August 1916. He was reported as wounded in action on 6 May 1917 with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder, rejoining his unit from hospital 2 days later. On 15 November 1917 he was detached to the 1 Anzac School, rejoining his unit on 24 December 1917. He returned to Australia 8 April 1919.
