Biography

Frederick John Harris (SN 4213) born in Ballarat, was a 31 year old bootmaker when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 20th 1915. On December 29th he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Demosthenes to serve with the 14th Infantry Battalion. In August 1916 he reached France where on January 31st 1917 he was seriously wounded, suffering shrapnel wounds to both ankles and to his arm. He was evacuated to the Kitchener War Hospital in England where his right foot had to be amputated. For him the war was over and he was returned to Australia aboard the Kanowna. He reached Melbourne on February 13th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on March 19th.
