Biography

Frederick John Harris was born in Ballarat and was a Boot Maker By trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 13th Reinforcement on 9 July 1915 at the age of 31. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. On January 31st 1917 he suffered severe wounds to both feet and his right arm. He was evacuated to hospital, first in Rouen and then to the Kitchener War Hospital in Brighton, England. His right foot had to be amputated and he was returned to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on February 13th 1918. He was discharged as æmedically unfit' a month later.
