Biography

James Francis Ryan was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Miner when he re-enlisted in the 7th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 5 November 1914 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray on 2 February 1915. He returned to Australia on 15 April 1915, re-embarking four months later with the 58th Battalion. Other than a few occasions of illness resulting in brief hospital stays and minor incidents of overstaying his leave, according to his records he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 27 Febryary 1919 aboard the Orsova.
