Harry George Jones (SN 2185), from Ballarat East, was a 27 year old grocer when he enlisted in Ballarat in July 1915. He trained at Ballarat and Seymour before embarking aboard the Burunga on April 7th 1916 as a reinforcement for the 8th Light Horse Regiment. He continued to train in Egypt, and in March 1917 he undertook Hotchkiss Gun training. Dysentery and abdominal problems caused frequent interruptions to his training, and in February 1918 it was determined that he should return to Australia for six months. He disembarked at Melbourne on March 18th and was transferred to the Australian General Hospital at Caulfield suffering from dysentery and debility. He was assessed as medically unfit for further active service and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on June 12th 1918.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Henry G. Jones.
