Biography

Stanley James Cochrane (SN 2141) was born in Ballarat and attended the Eureka Street State School. He was living in Ballarat East, was unmarried, and working as a battery feeder at a gold mine when he enlisted on July 19th 1915. In September he left Australia for overseas service on board the Hororata. He served with the 21st Infantry Battalion, reaching the rank of Corporal. In what was to be the A.I.F.’s last major action of the war he was seriously wounded in fighting near Montebrehain and died in the 5th Field Ambulance on 5th October 1918. He was 23 years of age and is buried at Templeux-le-Guerard Cemetery, France.
