Biography

Born in Reedy Lake, Horsham, James Gordon Harrop was a single 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on the 19th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on the 26th of November 1915.
On November 1st 1916 James was promoted to Lance Corporal, and then to Corporal on the 4th of March 1917. On September 30th 1917, he was promoted to Sergeant.
James was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on the 31st of October 1917. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on the 23rd of September 1918, and then to Lieutenant on the 1st of March 1919.
James returned to Australia on the 28th of June 1919 and his appointment was terminated on the 22nd of August 1919.
