Albert Arthur Mong was born in Ballarat and was a Farmer by trade when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 12 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27 September 1915 to serve as a driver with the 24th Battalion's transport section. In June 1917 he was withdrawn from France to the Northampton War Hospital in England for treatment for Trench Fever but otherwise he came through the war without significant illness or injury. He returned to Australia on the Trasos Montes, reaching Melbourne on May 22nd 1919.
