James Edwin Charles Lepp was born in Ballarat and was a Bacon Curer by trade when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 12 July 1915 at the age of 29. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27 September 1915 and came through the war without major injury or illness, serving with the 24th Battalion and the 1st Anzac Entrenching Battalion. He returned to Australia on the Trasos Montes, disembarking at Melbourne on May 22nd 1919.
