Biography

Leslie Robertson was born in Ballarat East and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 13 July 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27 September 1915. In March 1916 he moved to France where, on May 3rd 1917, he was wounded in action, sustaining a shrapnel wound to his left wrist. He was treated at the 5th Field Ambulance and was able to return to duty a week later. On October 9th he was again wounded, this time suffering a severe shell wound to his right thigh that fractured the femur. He was evacuated to hospital in England where he was assessed as no longer fit for active service. He left England on the Dunluce Castle, transferred to the Karoola at Cape Town, and finally disembarked at Melbourne on March 10th 1918.
