Biography

James Nesbitt Sherritt (also spelled SHERRIT/SHIRRITT) was born in Beechworth, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted with the 24th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 19 July 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. He proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force at Alexandria on 21 March 1916 before embarking overseas to France a week later. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 9 December 1916 and was awarded the full rank of Corporal in August 1917 before being attached to the cache of the 6th Infantry Battalion. He was again promoted, to Sergeant, on 14 September 1918 and returned to Australia on 10 April 1919.
