Born in Ballarat, Alfred Alexander Neal was a single 30 year old fitter at the time of his enlistment on the 19th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on the 29th of December 1915.
On the 11th of April 1917, Alfred was wounded in action. On the 27th of April he was transferred to England to be admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to his left forearm.
Alfred returned to Australia on the 24th of September 1917, and was discharged due to his wounds on the 28th of December 1917.
