Biography

Thomas Draper (SN 1061) born in Ireland, was a 33 year old married mechanic when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 21st 1915. Initially assigned to the 30th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Sydney aboard the Beltana on November 9th. He was transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion for service in France which he reached in May 1916. In April 1918 he was wounded in action when he was severely gassed and evacuated to hospital in England. This seemed to trigger other health problems, particularly epilepsy and at war’s end he was listed as seriously ill ‘epilepsy mania’. He left England aboard the Borda in December 1919 and disembarked at Melbourne on January 23rd 1920. He was further treated in Melbourne until discharged ‘medically unfit’ on March 11th 1921.
