Biography

Morgan Hopkins was born in Sebastapol and was a Blacksmith by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 27 October 1915 at the age of 41. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. He reached Suez towards the end of February, transferred briefly to the 58th Battalion then to the 15th Field Company Engineers. In October 1916 illness forced his withdrawal to hospital in England and he was unable to return to France until November 1917. Towards the end of August 1918 he came down with pleurisy and was evacuated to the Essex County Hospital back in England where he was assessed as unfit for further active service. He returned to Australia on the Gaika and disembarked at Melbourne on December 29th 1918.
