Gerald Laurence Monaghan was a single, 21 year old traveller at the time of his enlistment on the 4th of November 1914. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 10th of May 1915.
Gerald was appointed Lance Corporal on the 12th of August 1916. On the 2nd of September 1916, he was awarded the Military Medal.
On the 21st of October 1916, he was promoted to Corporal, and was then promoted to Sergeant on the 10th of November 1916.
On the 15th of November 1916, Gerald was wounded in action. He was transferred to England on the 21st of November 1916 with a gunshot wound to his ear. He rejoined his battalion on the 31st of August 1917.
Gerald returned to Australia on the 22nd of May 1919, and was discharged on the 5th of September 1919.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Gerald L. Monoghan.
