Biography

Rupert Niven Southwell was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Despatch Clerk when he enlisted with the 14th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 6 July 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 18 February 1916. He was admitted to hospital in November 1917 for tonsillitis and was transferred to Depot from the field. He re-joined his unit from Sick in December and marched into France, where he transferred to the 22nd Corps Cyclist Battalion. After a brief leave to the UK in September 1918 he returned to Australia on 4 June 1919.
