Biography

John Adrian BAIRD (SN 6222) was an 18 year old labourer from Learmonth when he enlisted on May 25th 1916. He left Australia aboard the Euripides on September 11th and joined the 8th Battalion in France in December. On September 22nd 1917 he suffered shrapnel wounds to his back and after two weeks in hospital in France he was transferred to hospital in England. He spent several months in England during which time he undertook machine gun training. In June 1918 he returned to France attached to the 5th Machine Gun Battalion with whom he served until osteo arthritis forced his withdrawal from the battlefield. He returned to Melbourne on the Suevic and disembarked at Melbourne on January 5th 1919. He was discharged on April 4th 1919 ‘medically unfit – osteo arthritis’.
