Biography

Stanley Walker (Capt.) was a 25 year old furniture salesman with military experience when he was appointed to the A.I.F. as a lieutenant on March 26th 1915. A month later he was promoted to the rank of Captain in the 2nd Australian Divisional Train. On May 26th he sailed from Melbourne on the Afric and after a short time in Egypt he reached Gallipoli in August. He served there until the evacuation in December. He reached France in late March 1916 and in July he was Mentioned in Despatches ‘for distinguished and gallant services rendered during the period of General Sir Charles Munro’s command of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force'. At around this time his health began to decline and his further service was characterised by frequent hospitalisations and periods of leave. After the war he returned on the Rio Negro and disembarked at Melbourne on July 22nd 1919.
