Biography

William Henry Litchfield (SN 1978) from Young Street in Ballarat East had attended the Golden Point State School before becoming a miner. At the age of 24 he enlisted in January 1915, and in mid-March he sailed from Australia aboard the Hororata to serve with the 7th Battalion. He came ashore at Gallipoli on July 13th 1915 and on August 12th he was wounded in action during the Battle of Lone Pine. His leg wound, then illness, required his evacuation to hospital at Mudros then Malta then England. Once recovered he was transferred to the 58th Battalion and crossed to France in August 1916. In March 1918 he sustained another serious leg wound that once again required his evacuation to hospital in England, and for him the war was over. He returned to Australia aboard the Marathon and disembarked at Melbourne on New Year’s Day 1919.
