Biography

Leslie Joseph Poole (SN 64) from Glazebrook Street in Ballarat East was educated at the Christian Brothers School. He was a sales assistant at a wool warehouse when he enlisted on August 17th 1914. He joined the 7th Battalion and was promoted to Corporal before embarking from Melbourne on board the Hororata in October. He took part in the historic Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915 and was appointed Company Sergeant Major at the end of April. A week later, his battalion was sent south to take part in the charge on entrenched Turkish lines at Krithia and, on May 8th 1915, he was killed in action. It was recorded that he was buried by Captain Goodfellow and Major Waterhouse but after the war his grave could not be found, and he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula.
