Robert Alfred Thomas (SN 4952) was born at Bealiba and was a 24 year old labourer, married to Margaret, when he enlisted on August 21st 1915. He trained with the 16th Depot Battalion in Bendigo and 6th Battalion reinforcements at Broadmeadows before embarking aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th 1916. He reached France in June and served there predominantly with the 1st Anzac Cyclists Battalion. He was fortunate enough to come through the war without serious physical injury and returned to Australia on the Fort Denison, disembarking back in Melbourne on May 10th 1919.
