Biography

John Henry Culpin (SN 6241) was born at Creswick, educated at Berringa State School and was living in Anderson Street Ballarat East when he enlisted on June 1st 1916. At that time he was a 22 year old miner. He embarked from Melbourne on the Euripides on September 11th and after a few weeks in England he joined the 8th Battalion in France on New Year’s Eve 1916. On April 14th 1918 he was wounded in action suffering a shrapnel wound to his hand. After the war he returned home on the Ascanius and disembarked at Melbourne on April 3rd 1919. Just two weeks later, on April 18th, he was run over and killed by a train at the Gordon Railway Station. He was 25 years of age.
