Raymond Fairhurst Cormack DCM, MM (SN 5511) from Dana Street, was a 19 year old salesman when he enlisted on June 22nd 1915. On September 10th he embarked from Melbourne on the Star of Victoria and sailed to Egypt where he spent some time in hospital suffering from tonsillitis. He then moved on to France where he served with the 12th Field Ambulance with great distinction. In April 1917 his gallantry and cheerfulness while under heavy shell fire earned for him a Military Medal then in September 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his courage and coolness while bringing in a stretcher case under heavy machine gun fire. Miraculously, despite his willingness to expose himself to extreme danger, he came through the war without significant physical injury.
