Biography

George Jerrard Greenshields (Captain) from Napier Street Black Hill was a student at Duntroon Military College when he enlisted on April 4th 1916. He left Australia in the Argyllshire on May 11th and sailed to England. On December 30th 1916 he crossed to France to serve with the 7th Field Artillery Brigade. On April 1st 1918 he was killed in action during a shelling barrage. He was 22 years of age and had only recently been promoted to the rank of Captain. At around the time of his death he was Mentioned in Despatches by Sir Douglas Haig and commended for his diligent service. He is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery in France and commemorated on the honour boards of the Black Hill State School and Ballarat High School.
