Biography

James Coghill (SN 72) was a 40 year old farm labourer living in Doveton Street Ballarat when he enlisted on February 19th 1916. He trained at Ballarat and Geelong before embarking on the Ascanius on May 27th, bound for France. While serving with the 39th Battalion he was twice wounded in action. On June 7th 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to his right hand, then, on July 14th he suffered a gunshot wound to his legs. With his health in decline, he was invalided to England in October 1918 and a month later he sailed for Australia on the Gaika, reaching Melbourne on December 29th 1918. He was discharged as ‘medically unfit - premature senility’. He died in April 1953 at the age of 78.
