Harry Montgomery Cairnes (SN 397) was a 24 year old stockman when he enlisted on August 24th 1914. On October 18th he embarked from Australia on the Argyllshire to serve with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. He saw action at Gallipoli and in France but was constantly troubled by health issues – enteritis, bronchitis and trench fever. He was returned to Australia on the Demosthenes and discharged on January 19th 1918 as ‘medically unfit – cardiac insufficiency.’
His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with the tree next to his brother in the Avenue.
