Biography

Colin Bradshaw Smith (SN 6618) from Neil Street in Ballarat, was a 27 year old station hand at Wagga Wagga when he enlisted on November 23rd 1916. He trained with the 3rd Depot Battalion at Liverpool N.S.W. before embarking for the war on February 7th 1917 aboard the Wiltshire. He underwent further training with the 5th Training Battalion in England before joining the 35th Battalion in France in January 1918. On April 4th 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering a fractured jaw and a severe gunshot wound to his leg. His wounds rendered him unfit for further active service and he was returned to Australia on the Takada, reaching Melbourne on February 11th 1919. In 1920 he revealed via a statutory declaration that his true name was Collard Bladd Smith.
