William B. Clayton (SN 3253) was an 18 year old labourer from Buninyong when he enlisted on July 10th 1915. He left Melbourne on the Nestor on October 11th and sailed to Egypt where he joined the 57th Battalion. He moved on to France where he was transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. On September 30th 1917 while fighting near Ypres in Belgium, he received severe shrapnel wounds to his right foot and was evacuated to hospital, first in France then on to England. The injury left him with a severe limp and he was assessed as permanently unfit for active service. He returned to Australia on the Euripides and was discharged on May 4th 1918. His service is remembered on the honour board of the Buninyong State School.
