Biography

James Stewart Campbell (SN 3270) attended the Wendouree State School but was a 21 year old labourer from Glendaruel near Clunes when he enlisted on July 17th 1915. On October 11th he embarked on the Nestor to serve in France with the 8th Battalion. On July 25th 1916 he was wounded in action when he received a mild shrapnel wound to his arm. In September 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Light Trench Mortar Battery in Belgium and it was while serving with that unit that he received a shell wound to his left leg and died of wounds on June 13th 1918. He was 23 years of age and is buried at the Borre British Cemetery in France. His sacrifice is also commemorated on the honour board of the Wendouree State School.
