Biography

George Oswald Sneddon (SN 3262) was born in Ballarat where he enlisted at the age of 19 on September 24th 1914. Single and working as a farm labourer on enlistment, it appears he married in October before embarking from Melbourne aboard the Borda with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade reinforcements in December. He was posted to Gallipoli in May then transferred to England after a couple of weeks in hospital. Several occasions absent without leave culminated in a period of absence of over 6 months before he was apprehended by civil police in June 1917. Court Martial proceedings resulted in a sentence of 12 months detention but this was remitted from November when he was posted to France. He returned to England after a period in hospital in March 1918 where he remained for the remainder of the war. He returned from England on board the Runic in December 1919 and was discharged as "Medically unfit - Injury to left knee" on March 8th 1920.

While having a connection to Ballarat, George is one of a number who served in the AIF but are not recognised with a tree in the Avenue.
